物质之所以能够呈现出任何形状，是因为它包含信息……这些信息是在粒子之间交换的，描述了该物质的每一个属性。宇宙不断寻求最大化随机性……也就是熵。因此，信息就是对熵的抵抗。噪声是熵。信号则是缺乏熵。生命与宇宙试图最大化熵的力量抗争，因为如果我们只是散乱的粒子，我们就会死去。当然，也有一些非生物的物质，但它们是否散乱并不影响它们不是生命的事实。由于所有事物最终都会朝着最大熵状态发展，即使是它们也会随着时间的推移而散乱。但生物体不能处于最大熵状态，因为维持生命需要复杂的结构。因此，生命就是对熵的抵抗。而对熵的抵抗就是信息，否则它就会是噪声。所以我们就是信息，因为否则我们就会死去。
